PALE SHADE (Philly/South Jersey)
https://linktr.ee/paleshade
Supergaze. Abstract landscapes. Pale Shade has a giant monolithic sound, and I'm really looking forward to hearing them fill up the tall-ceiling'ed grand hall at Cosmic Arts with it. A wall of fluid, often unpredictable sound, often surrealistically somnambulatory and euphorically volatile, in the most pleasing way. Their discography is actually a collection of adventures & journeys, communicated via song, expertly arranged with the most well-timed moments of tension and release. Great heartfelt cover of Elliott Smith's "Speed Trials".

SO TOTALLY (Philly)
https://linktr.ee/so_totally
What a lovely cauldron of finely constructed songs - lush, progressive & vigorous, with cascading waves of sound, saccharine reverb-drenched melodies, shifting leads, & blissonant textures. "Permeating through each song’s hypnotic, airy foundation is an undeniable pop sensibility that allows the band to effortlessly swim from ear-worm hooks to punishingly heavy bridges," (from a review a few years ago). Indeed, hypnosis is becoming a more evident theme in their musical, lyrical & aesthetic exploration. We here at Psychicstreetgang Intelligence Agency will be consulting with them on that front, as we continue activating our own ongoing psychological operation. Their upcoming "Double Your Relaxation" LP is coming out soon - 5/17/24 - on Tiny Engines records.

HALLOWEEN (Philly)
https://www.liinks.co/halloween.hq
Plunge into the ethereal gothic grunge of Halloween, whose songs weave and breathe within a serpentine reality fabric of sunlight & shadow layers, move mysteriously with big-boned skeletal structures, vocalize with smooth gliding phantasmagorical tones, and leave just enough room in the cracks between for the listener to sense a ghost (or some.. THING) in the machine. Spooky fun! Also, they've been working on a fully length LP this recent winter - looking forward to their upcoming release.

CURSE REVERSER (PHL/NYC)
https://linktr.ee/cursereverser
Experimental indie pop trio, featuring former members of Philly art rock outfit Line Leader. I'd say the sound verges into a kind of crisp, clever sophisti-gaze territory, yet while feeling friendly, intimate and home-made.

MULBERRY HILL (Pottstown!)
https://linktr.ee/Therealmulberryhill
High energy alternative rock with hints of indie sleaze, 80s-reminiscent dramatics, bauhaus-esque flourish. Self-described as skitzo rock, but this is just a self-deprecating way of saying they want to shake up small towns way out beyond the Philadelphia exurbs. They invited me to lay down a sax solo on one of their recent recordings! (Some of my best work!)

RONALD REAGAN? THE ACTOR? (Philly)
https://www.instagram.com/rrtaband/
Interstellar surf grooves, instrumental hot rod time travel soundtracks.

LOS CAMPEONES (Philly)
https://www.instagram.com/loscampeonesofficial/
Surfadelic-adjacent, hellcat-friendly, wrestling mask-menace.

If you end up feeling like you can't handle how much good music you're hearing during the show, no need to feel trapped - about a block down the street you'll find the very ambitious nightclub Rivet Canteen & Assembly, which I believe is also hosting a rockshow the same evening. If you get out to the area earlier, check out the recently re-opened Downtown Records & Tapes about a block away, open till 6, and there's also an actual army & navy store down the street.. I thought those things all but disappeared a decade ago! Buy a bullet belt or a World War 2 helmet! So cool!
